Satono Glow secured her third consecutive feature race victory for three-year-old fillies against colts when she produced a powerful finish to win the Group 2 $300,000 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.
The filly, trained by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton, gave hot favourite Paradoxium at least five lengths start at the top of the straight but unleashed a devastating burst of closing speed to claim an exciting win.
Her victory marked the third leg of a fillies’ clean sweep in successive feature races on the Rosehill program, following Proxima Dea’s win in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes and Chuchichschtli in the Listed Tapp-Craig.
“She’s a very, very good filly,” O’Shea stated.
“He’s a good colt (Paradoxium) so for her to run him down, it was a big effort.”
Satono Glow ($2.60) finished with such velocity under Zac Lloyd that she was able to race clear, posting a widening one-and-a-quarter lengths winning margin over Steel Will ($12), with Why So Hard ($21) a neck back in third.
Paradoxium, heavily supported into $2 favouritism, surged clear around the turn and appeared full of running in the straight, only to falter in the final 100m and fade to fourth.
Lloyd, who also partnered Proxima Dea to victory, expressed confidence that Satono Glow could run down Paradoxium, even when the filly was conceding the leader a significant start at the 400m mark.
“At the pace they went, I was able to get into a spot, and I thought if I could get her balanced up and give her the chance to show her acceleration, I could win,” Lloyd commented.
“Obviously it is hard coming the widest around Rosehill and picking up pretty good horses like Paradoxium but once I bought her out, picked her up, she was coming pretty quick.
“She is very smart, and as you saw in the mounting yard and again after the race, she is so professional and knows her job.
“It is half the battle. The other half is ability, and she has a lot of it.”
O’Shea holds a very high regard for Satono Glow and indicated the filly would be considered for the Group 1 $2 million Coolmore Stud Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 31.
Satono Glow had won brilliantly when resuming in the Cap d’Antibes Stakes at Flemington, but O’Shea opted to bring her back to Sydney for the Roman Consul Stakes.
“We wanted to see where we fit in, she’s ticked every box so far, and this race traditionally has always provided good form for the Coolmore,” O’Shea explained.
“We wanted to bring her home, keep her under our eye, and that was the rationale behind that.
“I thought she did a good job first-up and then she has had a little tick-over trial.
“It has all worked nicely so far so hopefully we can have a good next three weeks and turn up in Melbourne to give a good account of herself.”
The Roman Consul Stakes has historically been a strong indicator for the Coolmore Stud Stakes, with notable horses like Zoustar (2012), Brazen Beau (2013) and Switzerland (2025) achieving the double.
Following this performance, TAB Fixed Odds have tightened Satono Glow’s price to $6 equal third favouritism for the Coolmore Stud Stakes, alongside St Gotthard. The current favourite is The Next Episode at $3, with Natural Fling next at $5.
Satono Glow has now won four of her five starts – a record O’Shea believes should be unbeaten – and has amassed career earnings of $485,200 and rising.
She has already proven to be a shrewd acquisition, having been secured by O’Shea for $260,000 at the 2025 NZ Karaka Yearling Sale.
“We put together a syndicate of people to buy five fillies (each season) under the guidance of James Bester,” O’Shea revealed.
“No one knows more about fillies than James. He has bought Hips Don’t Lie among some other great fillies.
“He has helped us select this filly and a couple of others. They have done really well over the last couple of years and now they have got a real good one.”
