Sequinned on track for Red Roses Stakes success

Despite being a bit temperamental during trackwork, Sequinned is progressing well towards her upcoming challenge in the Group 3 Red Roses Stakes scheduled for Thursday.

The three-year-old chestnut filly, a daughter of Irish sire Pinatubo, put in a commanding performance to win by 2½ lengths at Caulfield over 1200m with James McDonald in the saddle, competing against her own age and sex.

This time, racing over 1100m down the Flemington straight, a repeat of her previous success is anticipated.

“I think we can (see the same again),” said Charlie Duckworth, assistant trainer to Chris Waller.

“She had a final gallop on Tuesday morning on the grass at Flemington. She is a bit of a handful as she carries her head in an unusual fashion but tries very, very hard.”

The Waller stable had initially considered entering the filly in the prestigious Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) last Saturday, which featured a significantly different calibre of competition than what she will encounter in this upcoming race.

“There’s a lot to like and she has galloped up the straight,” Duckworth elaborated.

“Obviously with James on, who’s got very good hands, and he’ll get her to switch off and relax and do those little things right. She has to get the first half right.

“With Chris’ training style, he tries to get them to harness as much energy as they can and then really hit the line.”

“She’s more than capable of winning a race like this and slightly better next preparation.”

Chris Waller and James McDonald achieved victory in this very race with Amelita back in 2024.
