Shanwah eyes Australian Derby after Moonee Valley win

Progressive three-year-old Shanwah has claimed his fourth straight victory, taking out the Alister Clark Stakes at Moonee Valley.

With four wins from eight starts, Shanwah has impressed since his first win in January. The son of Group 1 Two Thousand Guineas winner Too Darn Hot now has his sights set on the Group 1 ATC Australian Derby (2400m).

“If the horse is sound, and we’re happy, he can travel up to Sydney and have a crack at the Derby,” said Jack Turnbull, assistant trainer to Ciaron Maher.

Turnbull noted the slow start but praised Shanwah’s perseverance, adding, “Four-in-a-row, it’s not easy to do and he’s on an upwards trajectory, which is fantastic.”

Shanwah’s unbeaten run began with a Mornington maiden win, followed by a benchmark 64 victory at Caulfield in February, and a Group 2 win in the Autumn Classic.

Jockey Ethan Brown, who rode in this race, said, “He’s a horse of very high class that has continued to improve.”

Shanwah is now third in the ATC Derby market at $6.
