The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr team are eyeing the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) after Space Rider launched his spring with a strong victory at Moonee Valley.
The colt resumed in the Mick Gleeson Plate (1200m) on Saturday, sweeping home under Beau Mertens at $8.50 to defeat Wise Inlaw by three-quarters of a length, with Estremo third.
Winner of his Eagle Farm debut last December, Space Rider finished fourth at the same track a month later before being spelled to mature for a Guineas campaign.
“He wasn’t right at start number two … so you just forget that run and judge him on today and what he did first-up,” Price said.
The colt is set to progress to the Exford Plate, the Stutt Stakes and then onto the Guineas.
“He’s got mile written all over him and he’s a lovely horse,” Price said, adding that early work at the stable’s Sydney base had been crucial to his development.
