Staples aims for second Karrakatta Plate win with promising Castle Road

Craig Staples is hopeful of securing his second Karrakatta Plate victory with Castle Road at Ascot on Saturday, thanks to the guidance of his longtime friend and trainer, Paul Jordan.

Staples, who has taken on a part-time jockey role after becoming executive chairman of the Australian Jockeys Association, was convinced by Jordan to continue riding after initially planning to focus solely on his executive duties.

Castle Road, a two-year-old colt with impressive pace and raw ability, has exceeded expectations and is seen as a strong contender in Perth’s premier juvenile race. Staples, who had a tough start with Castle Road, is now an enthusiastic supporter, believing the horse can reach the top.

“Paul is the only reason I’m riding still,” Staples said. “It would be really thrilling to ride a winner for virtually one of my best friends.”

Castle Road, by leading WA sire Safeguard, was impressive last time out, winning the Listed Perth Stakes by 3 ¼ lengths after leading from start to finish. However, Staples acknowledges the horse’s tendency to race too hard early, but believes with more experience, he’ll reach the next level.

“I’m waiting for him to get used to race days because he still gets stressed out,” Staples said. “The day the penny drops he’ll be even better.”

After a positive track work session, Staples is confident about Castle Road’s chances, especially with a favorable barrier four draw.

“Thrilled with four, it’s my favourite barrier,” Staples said. “He still is going to lead and probably by a bit, but I wouldn’t say they will let me get away so far this time.”

Castle Road is currently priced at $7.50 for the race, behind Yes Queen ($2.40) and Talkanco ($5.50).
