Bjorn Baker’s classy mare Stefi Magnetica ($3.90) has bounced back from a minor setback to claim the $2 million Group 2 The Invitation at Randwick.
Under a patient ride from Jason Collett, the five-year-old settled back before storming down the outside to edge out Gerringong ($14) by a neck, with Gangsta Granny ($9) another half-length away in third.
The victory pushed the daughter of All Too Hard past $7 million in career earnings and ended a frustrating run of near-misses for Baker during the spring carnival.
“I didn’t have any confidence coming in today off a little bit of a setback, and she was great,” Baker said. “It’s hard to win races this time of year, you need a very special horse and a special team behind you.”
Collett praised her finishing burst, saying, “She’s just electric when you get her back and let that tempo unfold in front.”
Baker said Stefi Magnetica may next head to the Champions Mile on November 8.
