Team Edmonds chasing Magic Millions Classic spot

The team that propelled star filly Houtzen into the spotlight will unveil their Magic Millions spearhead in the Phelan Ready Stakes at Eagle Farm.

Toby and Trent Edmonds will saddle up Alpine Edge in the Phelan Ready from the coveted rails barrier with Robbie Fradd aboard.

The son of Better Than Ready is a firming $4.40 second favourite with TAB fixed odds for Saturday’s Listed race following a Doomben barrier trial win on December 1.

“He’s a really serious colt, although he did a little bit wrong in the trial at Doomben,” co-trainer Toby Edmonds said.

“He probably could’ve won a bit easier but the track was a bit firm and he wanted to change stride near the post.

“Robbie (Fradd) said he just wanted to look after him and not push him out too much.”

With no prize money in the bank, Alpine Edge can safely secure a spot in the Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast on January 16 if he wins the Phelan Ready.

Toby Edmonds trained Houtzen to win the 2017 Magic Millions with Jeff Lloyd in the saddle from the extreme outside alley of 16.

Toowoomba is shaping as a back-up plan for the Waterhouse-Bott stable if Summerbeel fails to gain a start in the Calaway Gal Stakes.

Summerbeel is in danger of missing a start as third emergency.

Plan B is to run at Toowoomba on Saturday night in a 1000 metre two-year-old Plate.

Summerbeel is not eligible for the Millions because she was sold at the Karaka yearling sales in New Zealand for $NZ310,000.
