Geelong Cup Free Tips, Bets and Field Preview – 2020

The Geelong Cup is always a highly anticipated race, and we are set for an intriguing edition of the mile and a half contest on Wednesday afternoon.

Several horses will use this race as a final point of call ahead of the Melbourne Cup, and the 2020 Geelong Cup subsequently shapes as a terrific betting race.

Geelong Cup – Winner

No. 2 Ashrun – Bet Now: $4.00

Ashrun will have his first Australian start in the Geelong Cup and anything close to his best form would see him into the finish.

The five-year-old son of Authorized has returned plenty of big efforts in his native Germany and Europe throughout his racing career and brings a record of three wins and as many minors from eleven starts to Australia.

He contested two 3000m races in August, finishing second in both the Listed PB Carrousel at Deauville and the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay.

I don’t think there’s any doubt that he’ll be better in the Melbourne Cup 2020, but I think his class can and will see him into the finish on Wednesday afternoon.

Geelong Cup – 2nd

No. 7 Steel Prince – Bet Now: $6.00

Steel Prince has improved for each of his first three starts back from a spell this time, and the Geelong Cup looks a very winnable race for him.

The Nathaniel gelding finished down the order in the Heatherlie Handicap when resuming at Caulfield, but he has placed in each of the Naturalism Stakes and the Bart Cummings in the wake.

Jye McNeil takes the ride and I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish.

Geelong Cup – 3rd

No. 3 King Of Leogrance – Bet Now: $9.00

King Of Leogrance clearly needed the run when he beat only two runners home in the Turnbull Stakes when resuming, but he tends to enjoy big improvement with one under the belt and will relish getting out to a mile and a half in the Geelong Cup.

The Camelot gelding found career-best form last preparation, winning the Roy Higgins Quality before putting paid to his rivals in the Adelaide Cup most notably.

He’s another horse that will be peaking third-up and over two miles in the Melbourne Cup, but the $11 available for him in this race does look over the odds.

Geelong Cup – 4th

No. 11 Entente – Bet Now: $18.00

Speaking of horses that are over the odds, Entente has opened a $34 chance in Geelong Cup betting, which seems ridiculous to me.

Entente has been a good horse for the Waterhouse & Bott stable since debuting, missing a placing just three times in ten career starts.

He is yet another runner that has noticeably improved with each effort this time, and he is seeking a hat-trick on Wednesday following wins in BM88 company at Rosehill, and the Port Macquarie Cup most recently.

It’s obviously a step up in class, but he’ll carry just 55kgs and will launch from barrier 4.

Geelong Cup Suggested Bets

  • 3 Units straight out #2 Ashrun
  • Boxed Trifecta of the selections above
