Victoria Derby Free Tips, Bets and Field Preview – 2020

The Victoria Derby is one of the Spring Carnival’s highlights each and every year, and we are set for another exciting edition of the staying feature for three-year-olds at Flemington on Saturday.

He has had just two competitive starts so far, but Young Werther looks to be a horse of immense ability, and he has opened the favourite in 2020 Victoria Derby betting.

There’s no doubt that he’d need to return a very bold effort to justify his quote, but I’ve included him in the 2020 Victoria Derby tips below.

Victoria Derby – Winner

No. 5 Young Werther – Bet Now: $3.40

Ideally, he would have tuned up with a run in last week’s Moonee Valley Vase but alas, it wasn’t meant to be. Regardless, I still think that Young Werther is the runner to beat in the 2020 Victoria Derby field.

The Tavistock colt stamped himself as a runner to follow with an easy win on debut at Geelong last month, and he really was a good thing licked when second in the Listed Super Impose Stakes last time out, having been caught in a pocket and absolutely rocketing home.

I think that fitter third-up from the good draw and with the right jockey aboard (Damien Oliver), as well as breeding suggesting he’ll relish the 2500m, he will take beating.

Victoria Derby – 2nd

No. 1 Cherry Tortoni – Bet Now: $4.50

The Moonee Valley Vase has produced plenty of Victoria Derby winners since the turn of the century, and this year’s winner Cherry Tortoni looks capable of building on that record.

The Night Of Thunder gelding won each of his first three starts upon debuting in May this year, and returned from a freshen up to place in both the Exford Plate and the Stutt Stakes.

He didn’t fire when seventh in the Spring Champion Stakes in Sydney, but clearly a return to the Victorian way of going last weekend was the right decision.

I do believe that there is a genuine query over whether or not he’ll get the trip, but I think that he can be in the finish on class alone.

Victoria Derby – 3rd

No. 3 Johnny Get Angry – Bet Now: $31.00

A horse that I think is a genuine winning chance at big Victoria Derby odds is the Dennis Pagan-trained Johnny Get Angry.

He is still a six-start maiden, but he has returned some bold efforts in decent company, and looks perfectly suited to both the 2500m and the big Flemington track.

He finished fourth in the Super Impose Stakes and filled the minors behind Cherry Tortoni last week, and he can lob into a nice position in transit from barrier 5.

The $31 available at publish could prove to be huge overs, and I am more than happy to have an each-way nibble at that price.

Victoria Derby – 4th

No. 2 Albarado – Bet Now: $8.00

Neds Classic winner Albarado is another horse on the rise, and I can’t find a reason why he won’t be in the finish of the Victoria Derby.

Albarado has missed placing just once in six career starts so far, but his last two efforts to finish third in the Super Impose and win the Neds Classic suggested that he has found peak condition.

In-form hoop Mark Zahra retains the ride, he is yet another horse whose breeding suggests he will stay all day, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him in the Victoria Derby winner’s stall.

Victoria Derby Suggested Bets

  • 4 Units straight out #5 Young Werther
  • 1 Unit E/W #3 Johnny Get Angry
  • Boxed Trifecta of the selections above
