Chris Waller’s patience was rewarded when Via Sistina claimed a stunning 1-3/4 length victory in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick on Saturday, avenging a disappointing defeat in last year’s race.
Via Sistina finished second to Pride Of Jenni in 2023 after miscalculating the pace, but on Saturday, the mare had a clear mission to assert her dominance in middle-distance racing.
“It does. It was a tough day that day,” Waller said when asked if the victory made up for last year’s loss.
The seven-year-old has now won eight Group 1 races, seven of them this season. Waller described her as a “race day marvel” and mentioned they were still getting to know her.
James McDonald settled her midfield after a slow start, and despite a brief moment of uncertainty, the mare unleashed a powerful finish to claim the win.
“Once I got those gaps, she sliced through and went bang,” McDonald said.
Dubai Honour ($8) was brave in defeat after a wide run, while Tom Kitten ($15) earned third, and Ceolwulf made a strong late charge to finish fifth.
Waller also won the Queen Of The Turf Stakes with Fangirl, marking a memorable day for the trainer. “It’s Sydney’s biggest day of racing… the good horses are here,” he said.
