Waller eyes first Inglis Millennium success with promising juveniles

Coming off a Canonbury Stakes triumph that propelled Hidrix into Golden Slipper contention, Chris Waller is set to unleash a further trio of juveniles at Randwick.

Fireball and Defensemen are slated to compete in the $2 million Inglis Millennium (1100m), an event the top trainer has not yet conquered, as Campione D’Italia prepares for his initial appearance in the Listed Lonhro Plate (1000m).

In recent years, Waller has emerged as a key figure in two-year-old contests and notes that his yard boasts several speedy young horses ready to shine during the carnival.

“We have five or six good two-year-olds and we are just finding out where they fit in,” Waller said.

“Fireball has already won a race at Rosehill quite impressively. He had a trial the other morning and he has come back well.

“Defensemen has had two runs in the Golden Gift and one (race) before that and was just in behind them. He has come back strong.”

The pair Fireball and Defensemen will jump from adjacent gates in barriers three and four, with the former standing out as the market leader at $5.50 joint favourite next to Tulloch Lodge’s Plagiarism.

Additionally, Waller fields Campione D’Italia in the day’s other juvenile highlight, the $500,000 yearling buy who was withdrawn from last week’s Canonbury Stakes to target Saturday’s Lonhro Plate (1000m).

That said, Waller’s group of juveniles might take a backseat to his six runners parading in demonstration gallops following the early races.

Aeliana (Zac Lloyd), Autumn Glow (McDonald) and Lazzura (Tommy Berry) are due to stretch over 1000m post-race one, while Lady Shenandoah (McDonald), Lindermann (Nash Rawiller) and Trinity College (Lloyd) will get workouts after race two amid their ongoing autumn preparations.
