Waller-trained fillies impress at Rosehill

Filly Affari has broken her maiden status with a convincing all-the-way victory at Rosehill, following five minor placings in her initial six outings.

Jockey James McDonald attributed the three-year-old’s overdue win in the Inglis Xtra Bonus Plate (1200m) on Wednesday to the addition of blinkers, noting her potential to climb through the ranks.

“She has been promising that,” McDonald stated. “She goes really well. She’s just, for some unknown reason, always found one better but they’ve all been good horses to be fair. Blinkers on definitely worked wonders today. That was a masterstroke and hopefully she can go on.”

Purchased for $370,000 by Denise Martin’s Star Thoroughbreds at the Magic Millions, Affari, by promising sire Home Affairs, was having her fifth start of the campaign. This followed four consecutive second placings, but trainer Chris Waller’s stable representative, Darren Beadman, indicated her preparation might continue given her strong finish.

“Chris is a great judge with that,” Beadman remarked. “But when they win like that and they hit the line with purpose like she did, more times than not they come out of that, and they’ll butter up next time.”

Later in the day, Waller and McDonald teamed up again with another promising filly, Ballet D’Light, who debuted with a win in the MyRacehorse Handicap (1100m).

Beadman commented that the daughter of I Am Invincible, who had undergone five trials, had been a work in progress but was now showing her potential.

“They’ve been very patient with her. She’s a little bit special,” Beadman said. “James did a lovely job rating the speed and she showed a nice turn of foot.”

The successful Waller-McDonald partnership will aim for major Sydney spring races at Randwick on Saturday, with Joliestar in the $20 million Everest (1200m) and Autumn Glow in the $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m).
