ir Rupert Clarke Stakes weather watch for fitter Sinawann

The Anthony and Sam Freedman stable hope the forecast rain does not eventuate before the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield.

Sinawann will represent the father-and-son training team in the Group 1 1400m handicap on Saturday, but a significantly wet track may see the former Irish galloper remain at hope.

Up to 5mm is predicted on Friday evening with further rain forecast on Saturday.

Sinawann returned from a break with a pleasing sixth in the Listed Regal Roller Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 13 and the Freedman’s have poured the work into the entire since.

“He’s fit now as we’ve been pretty hard on him,” Sam Freedman said.

“It’s a good gate for him but we’re a little bit on weather watch as he hates it soft and heavy so hopefully it’s a good track.”

Sinawann’s only Australian win came in the Group 3 Kevin Heffernan Stakes over Saturday’s course and distance last November.

Freedman hopes Sinawann can be ridden in a similar fashion, getting out late and sprinting hard.

“I think the best way to ride is to expose him very late,” Freedman said.

“He’s shown us proper ability, but we probably haven’t had him properly screwed down since that win.

“He was on the chewy a little bit first-up so that will have taken the edge off him.

“He should relax well, and the gate is important as he can get a nice smother up. He’s a strong travelling horse and probably needs a bit of luck at the right time and he’ll be there, or thereabouts.”

The Freedman’s also accepted with Open Minded in Saturday’s race, but he is unlikely to gain a start being the fourth emergency.

“He’s drawn a good gate and if he gets a run, with no weight, he could run first five,” Freedman said.

“He may lack the class of some of the others, but he’s honest.”

If Open Minded does not gain a start, he will head to Sandown on Sunday week for the Listed Testa Rossa Stakes (1300m).
