Winners cop Caulfield and Melbourne Cup penalties

Following their victories at Flemington and Randwick respectively, Grand Promenade and Montefilia have been penalised 1kg for both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace -trained Grand Promenade won the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m) on Saturday which gave the stayer a ballot exemption into the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 2.

Montefilia won the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) on Saturday to book her place in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 16 in which she will be ridden by Jye McNeil.

Since 2000, seven Metropolitan winners have contested the Caulfield Cup with Railings (2005) and Tawqeet (2006) completing the double and prior to that Hayai was the last horse to win both in 1983.

Nine Metropolitan winners have run in the Melbourne Cup since 2000 with Glencadam Gold the best placed finisher when sixth in the 2012 Cup.

The last horse to complete The Metropolitan-Melbourne Cup double was Macdougall in 1959, while Natski was the last Metropolitan winner to place in the Cup when second in 1988.

While he moved to 39th in the Order of Entry into the Caulfield Cup, Grand Promenade is expected to bypass the race and head straight to the Melbourne Cup.

The 1kg penalty handed out by Racing Racing Victoria Executive General Manager – Racing, Greg Carpenter, is the same as the previous two winners of The Bart Cummings, Surprise Baby and Persan, who both went on to finish fifth in the Melbourne Cup at their next starts.

Despite being beaten in The Bart Cummings, placegetters Tralee Rose (second) and Master Of Wine (third) both enhanced their chances of a Melbourne Cup start, with Tralee Rose moving from 37th to 31st in the Order of Entry, while Master of Wine has moved from 57th to 40th.

Incentivise could not be re-handicapped for either Cup following his victory in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Saturday but did earn a ballot exemption for the Caulfield Cup.
