Outside barriers told the story in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington, with Disneck securing his first black-type victory.
Barriers 11 and 12 filled the exacta in the 12-horse field, producing a rough result for punters.
Resuming and sent out at $11, Disneck was ridden patiently by Daniel Stackhouse before launching down the outside.
The gelding surged clear at the 200m to win by a length from Extratwo, with Contemporary finishing a long head away third.
Race favourite Hedged hugged the inside but failed to factor, finishing tenth.
Disneck’s previous best win came at Benchmark 94 level, though he had shown promise when fifth in the Group 3 Rising Fast Stakes (1200m).
A plain Hawkesbury trial may have turned punters away, but Stackhouse was confident.
“I spoke to the stable representative this morning and he said, ‘just ride him cold, give him his chance and justbe patient,” Stackhouse said.
“He’s got a great turn of foot. I wasn’t too concerned about his first up trial.”
Stackhouse said the plan unfolded perfectly, describing the win as an ideal start to the preparation.
