Tom Charlton was just five when John O’Shea won his first Group race, but the pair celebrated together as training partners after Yorkshire claimed The Ingham (1600m) at Randwick.
The win marked O’Shea’s fourth success in the race and Charlton’s first as co-trainer, having been part of the stable when it last won in 2022.
“I remember we had one-two a few years ago with Kirwan’s Lane and Lion’s Roar so very special,” Charlton said.
Yorkshire ($3.90 fav) surged clear to score by three-quarters of a length, taking his record to eight wins from 11 starts in the $2 million feature.
The result completed a stunning turnaround after the gelding finished last in The Hunter (1300m) and was diagnosed with heart arrhythmia.
He rebounded to win the Festival Stakes (1500m) before completing the rare double.
“We were in a spot of bother after his first-up run and full credit to everyone and the processes that took place,” Charlton said.
Yorkshire now earns a ballot exemption into the Doncaster Mile (1600m) in autumn.
