Trainer Michael Freedman admits he’s uncertain about how Givemethebeatboys will perform when the former European sprinter makes his Australian debut in the Expressway Stakes at Randwick.
While European imports are increasingly seen in Australian racing, most are bred for middle-distance or staying events, not sprints.
Givemethebeatboys, a Group 1 placegetter and three-time stakes winner over 1207m in Ireland, poses a unique challenge for Freedman, who hopes to gauge his abilities on Saturday.
“To be honest, I’m not entirely sure. I am still learning my way with him,” Freedman said.
“He’s a rarity as a European sprinter, as most imports here are more middle-distance or staying horses.”
However, Freedman is pleased with the horse’s progress since quarantine, noting his calm temperament despite being a four-year-old stallion.
Having trialled twice in preparation, Givemethebeatboys will face five rivals in the 1200m race, including Group 1 winners Joliestar and Magic Time.
Tim Clark, aiming for his fourth Group 2 sprint win in eight years, will ride the horse, and Freedman is eager to see how he handles a bend, having only raced on straight courses in the UK and Ireland.
