A recent throat operation is hoped to extend the career of The Astrologist, who will compete in the Listed Straight Six (1200m) at Flemington on Saturday.
The rising nine-year-old underwent surgery following a midfield finish at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, and trainer Troy Corstens says the gelding’s breathing has improved significantly.
“He would trot, and canter and he would make a noise, so we have given him throat surgery, and his breathing is the best it has ever been,” Corstens said.
Despite ongoing sickness issues, The Astrologist has earned nearly $3 million throughout his career. Corstens is optimistic about his return but acknowledged the horse may be better suited to longer distances, following a fast trial at Flemington.
Meanwhile, Marble Nine, trained by the same team, will also contest Saturday’s sprint at Flemington. Corstens is hopeful the conditions will suit Marble Nine, who struggled on heavy ground at Warrnambool.
