Trainer Dan Meagher is turning to fresh legs and a step back in trip for former Singapore star Lim’s Kosciuszko in Saturday’s Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield.
The eight-year-old drops in distance after running over 1400m a month ago, with Meagher believing weight-for-age conditions are ideal for the seasoned gelding.
Lim’s Kosciuszko boasts 22 wins from 30 starts in Singapore and Hong Kong and has had two Australian runs — a solid third at Flemington followed by a midfield finish at Sandown.
“He was disappointing on face value last time,” Meagher told RSN.
“But… he was carrying topweight and hadn’t led for two-and-a-half years, and it probably didn’t suit him.”
Meagher has skipped a jump-out to keep the gelding fresh and is confident the shorter trip won’t be an issue.
“Sometimes these older horses enjoy coming back in distance… he still looks well, and his work has been good enough.”
Jason Maskiell replaces Ryan Houston in the saddle.
