Pike lands treble at Bunbury to tighten grip on jockey titles

It was a standout Saturday for William Pike, who booted home a treble at Bunbury to strengthen his hold on both the Australian and Perth jockey premierships.

He opened the day with an easy win aboard exciting youngster Twisted Steel, before steering Fancy Red to victory in the Belmont Oaks, and finished with Supernatural in the last.

Fancy Red’s Oaks win was her sixth from nine starts, continuing a strong winter campaign after her recent 1400m win at Pinjarra.

The win also extended the dominance of Adam Durrant and Pike in the Listed feature, with the duo combining to win the race 12 times.

“I kind of thought they were mad trying to get her over ground,” Pike told Tabradio.

“I was proven wrong on many levels, but very happy with it all.”

Pike also praised Twisted Steel, unbeaten in two starts, and flagged the Ascot carnival as a likely target.

“He’s doing it well and clearly got above average ability.”

The treble brings Pike to 157.5 wins nationally and 98.5 in Perth, edging ahead of rival Chris Parnham.

“Definitely the local metro premiership,” he said.

“I wouldn’t say no to that.”
