Browne team aims high as unbeaten McGaw returns in Vain Stakes

Emma-Lee and David Browne are eyeing a big spring after assembling their strongest team since relocating to Melbourne.

The Pakenham trainers have Statuario, Scary and Basilinna entered for the Caulfield Cup (2400m), with Scary also nominated for the Cox Plate (2040m).

Their campaign begins Saturday with unbeaten colt McGaw in the Group 3 Vain Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield. Targets include the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) or Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m), with the Group 3 H D F McNeil Stakes (1200m) likely next.

A winner at Pakenham in January and in The Showdown (1200m) in March, McGaw has had just one jump-out ahead of his return.

“He’s vulnerable with that one jump-out… but it’s a long spring,” Browne said.

The New Zealand expats enjoyed a taste of spring last year, highlighted by Scary’s Group 1 Victoria Derby second placing.
