Annabel and Rob Archibald are hoping a gear change will give classy filly Tupakara the edge when she lines up in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes at Randwick.

The three-year-old has placed in four of her seven starts, including a Group 1 third behind Nepotism in the Champagne Stakes (1600m). She resumed with a strong second to Apocalyptic in the Furious Stakes (1200m) and will wear blinkers for the first time on Saturday.

“She is a lovely, honest horse,” Annabel Archibald said. “When you’ve got ‘J Mac’ on it helps and we’ve added the blinkers as well.”

James McDonald retains the ride after galloping her in the new gear earlier this week.

Tupakara will be joined by stablemates Kujenga and Next Jen, who also contested the Furious Stakes.

“Next Jen’s run was good … Kujenga was terrific off one trial so she was always going to take big improvement,” Archibald said.

All three are expected to appreciate the rise to 1400 metres as they progress towards the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m).
