Autumn Mystery will chase a third straight win in next month’s Victoria Derby after securing the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
The Rory Hunter-trained colt backed up his maiden success in the Victoria Derby Preview (1800m) with another strong display, moving to the second line of betting for the November 1 feature.
“We’ll just see how he pulls up over the next couple of days, the horse is more important than anything, but it’s sensational,” Hunter said.
“It’d be a boyhood dream, that’s for sure. This horse is a star. He’s still six months away from being the best of him. It’s just incredible.”
A patient ride from Blake Shinn saw Autumn Mystery ($4.60) charge through on the inside to win by three-quarters-of-a-length from Miewa ($4.20), with Amazake ($26) close behind.
Shinn later finished runner-up on Just A Journey in the Ethereal Stakes, where Spicy Lu booked her VRC Oaks spot with a tough on-pace win.
