Hawkesbury trainer Brad Widdup is taking a calculated gamble, sending Jedibeel to Flemington for the VRC Champions Sprint (1200m) on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The six-year-old son of Savabeel will make his Victorian debut at start number 25, having risen through the Sydney ranks with Stakes wins in the Listed Razor Sharp Stakes and Group 2 Challenge Stakes.

Jedibeel has since contested three Group 1 sprints, including The Everest (1200m) at Randwick last month.

“He has been really good all preparation,” Widdup said. “He ran great in The Everest.”

Widdup elected to skip the Russell Balding Stakes due to an awkward draw, instead opting for a Melbourne tilt.

While racing down the Flemington straight will be a new challenge, Widdup is optimistic.

“If he can stalk them and get out late, I’m sure he’ll run on strongly,” he said.
