Chris Waller, who helped extend Godolphin’s strong Golden Rose record earlier this spring, is hoping to restore their influence in Saturday’s $400,000 Sandown Guineas at Caulfield.
He saddles two runners in the 1600-metre Group 2 — Godolphin-owned Burma Star and Yulong colt Pictor.
Waller has won the race once, with Pressday in 2010, during a period when Sheikh Mohammed’s team dominated the Sandown Guineas.
“His record is better than mine, so it’s good to link up with him,” Waller joked.
Burma Star arrived from James Cummings’ yard as a maiden but has since collected a Warwick Farm victory, a Rosehill second and a breakthrough stakes win in the Springtime Stakes (1400m).
“He’s come through that well, he’s a really neat horse with a great action and is very professional,” Waller said.
Ben Melham rides Burma Star from barrier three, while his wife Jamie partners Pictor from gate nine after finishing 1¼ lengths behind his stablemate last start.
