Gringotts primed for rare ‘double-double’ bid in The Gong

Ciaron Maher is set to rely on Gringotts as his sole runner in The Gong, with the trainer eyeing an unusual slice of racing history at Kembla Grange next weekend.

The six-year-old could complete a rare ‘double-double’ — winning both The Big Dance and The Gong in consecutive years — after securing his second Big Dance victory on Melbourne Cup Day.

“He’s come out of The Big Dance super,” Maher said. “He’s probably in career best form.”

Gringotts’ original spring target was the King Charles III Stakes, but elevated blood readings forced a reset toward the $1 million feature at Kembla.

Rated the $2.50 favourite, Gringotts leads Maher’s entries with stablemate Vivy Air heading to Perth for the Northerly Stakes, while Duke De Sessa goes for a spell.

A decision remains on Lugh, who ran third in The Big Dance.

“We are still leaving the door open for him to start with Gringotts but a decision is still to come,” assistant Jack Turnbull said.
