Morton fields powerful trio in bid for Northerly Stakes breakthrough

Dan Morton is chasing a breakthrough Group 1 victory on home soil and will launch a three-pronged attack on Saturday’s Northerly Stakes at Ascot.

Morton saddles unbeaten star King Of Light, along with stablemates Pure Excess and In Good Order, in the final Group 1 of The Pinnacles.

Rising talent King Of Light, to be ridden by William Pike, puts a five-race winning streak on the line as he steps into open company for the first time. Morton admits it is a significant jump in grade but believes the gelding is ready for the challenge.

“He’s a mint horse to train, so laid back and gets the job done,” Morton told Racing WA.
“He really raises the bar come race day.
“He’s an exciting horse and he’s got to raise the bar again on Saturday, but he’s doing everything right and is a deserved favourite, but he’s going to have to take another big step.”

King Of Light claimed the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) on November 22, while Pure Excess arrives off her maiden win in the Group 3 Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m).

Morton said Pure Excess thrives with lighter work and carries just 50kg.
“She’s a lighter filly and the three-week gap between runs is ideal for her,” he said.

In Good Order, ninth in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m), is building towards the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m).

“He’s a happy horse and in good order as he’s starting to get towards peak fitness,” Morton said.
