Hong Kong-destined jockey Ethan Brown maintained his impressive streak by securing another double at Caulfield within three days, achieving contrasting triumphs on two heavily backed favourites during Monday’s Super Bowl card at the Heath venue.
Brown first piloted the promising gelding Yes Yoshi ($1.65) to a commanding victory in the day’s third event before snatching success in the final strides with She’s A Hustler ($1.50) in a subsequent race.
These represented Brown’s sole mounts of the afternoon, marking his debut partnership with both runners under race conditions.
Under the guidance of trainer Ciaron Maher, She’s A Hustler rebounded from three unplaced efforts as a strong market elect in her initial outings this preparation, with Brown noting that a poor start impaired her, lending greater value to the narrow success than the winning distance indicated.
“It’s hard being back and wide around this track and I know she’s only won by the barest of margins, but there was a lot more merit (to the win) than it looked,” he said.
“She’s on the way up. She’s a very nice horse going forward and (there’s) no better way to kick off your prep.”
She’s An Artist, offspring of Trapeze Artist with now three victories from six appearances, edged Excess ($13) by a short half-head in the 1100m benchmark 78 contest, while Along The River ($6) finished one length further back in third.
Brown enjoyed a far smoother passage on Yes Yoshi, the Yes Yes Yes gelding who notched a second successive triumph, dominating the 1200m Class 1 by 1-1/4 lengths over Savitri in a display that earned praise from the rider.
The three-year-old prepared by Charlotte Littlefield followed his track-record debut at Sale with this effortless success, prompting Brown to comment:
“He’s a big baby at the minute, but for him to win like that and show that sort of ability as immature as he is is quite exciting going forward,” Brown said.
This latest brace, building on Saturday’s wins with Observer and Light Infantry Man, propelled Brown to joint second on the Victorian Metropolitan Jockeys’ Premiership with 29 strikes, trailing injured frontrunner Mark Zahra by seven.
Nonetheless, the 26-year-old faces a significant absence from local action, having secured a contract for Hong Kong’s concluding three months over the weekend.
Brown joined Jamie Mott and Logan Bates as one of three jockeys to notch doubles across the seven-race program.
