After demonstrating his quality versus top three-year-olds with a fresh return second to star filly Tempted, Napoleonic now faces the task of showing he can extend his talent.

The promising colt has his chance at Rosehill this Saturday as he steps up to 1400 metres for the initial occasion in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes.

Limited to 1200m during spring where he secured three victories from four outings including a stakes success at Moonee Valley, co-trainer Tom Charlton feels he wants more ground these days and might go to 1600m for the Randwick Guineas next month.

“We feel confident about the 1400 and, in regards to a mile, it’s definitely a possibility,” Charlton said.

“This weekend will give us a more definitive answer to whether we press on (to the Randwick Guineas).

“We will get through the weekend but there are some nice options on the table.”

The positive outlook from Charlton is echoed by rider Zac Lloyd, who was on Napoleonic for his fresh run and retains the mount in the Hobartville.

Lloyd sees a hard track as more of a concern than the extra distance, yet he’s eager for his ride to take on Group 1 victors like Autumn Boy and Attica.

“I think he’s a very good colt,” Lloyd said.

“I ride him a fair bit at home, so I’m very excited to see what he can do on Saturday.

“And even after Saturday, probably in Group One company, I think he’ll perform very well.

“He does appreciate a bit of give in the track, which he might not get at Rosehill, so that could be a little knock against him. But I think 1400, and in due time a mile, will suit him a lot.”

Journeyman, who impressed with a midweek debut triumph at Warwick Farm earlier this month, was withdrawn from the event after lameness was detected in his off-hind leg on Wednesday.

Co-trainer Will Freedman indicated the gelding is heading for additional examinations and although the issue seems minor, they plan to err on caution and give him a break.
