Waller holding off on weather concerns for Verry Elleegant Stakes

A wet track might introduce an interesting element to the Verry Elleegant Stakes, yet trainer Chris Waller is not focusing on the weather until the day of the race.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecast covers a broad range for the rest of the week, with possible rainfall between 4mm and up to 60mm.

Classy mare and market leader Autumn Glow has triumphed on various ground conditions, such as a heavy 10 during the Toy Show Quality (1100m) last August, though her prowess on such surfaces at elite Group 1 level is unproven.

Waller is not allowing surface conditions to bother him at this stage.

“I’ll worry about it Saturday morning,” Waller said.

“If you worry about it before then, you start bringing things in that you have no control over and you can lose sight of other things. Yes, it’s a factor. But as long as it’s safe, she will be running.

“They’ve got the tracks in Sydney pretty good at the moment . . . There will be room for a bit of rain.”

The newest sensation in racing, Autumn Glow remains unbeaten after nine outings, having made a seamless shift to weight-for-age racing by defeating stable companions Aeliana and Lindermann in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) most recently.

Aeliana and Lindermann will once more oppose her in the Group 1 Verry Elleegant Stakes (1600m) at Randwick this Saturday, with expectations they will perform stronger over the longer trip.

“They’re a bit more comfortable at the distance,” Waller said.

“But it’s hard to quantify, Autumn Glow might be better too.”

Waller has secured seven of the last 10 editions of this event – including four wins with Winx from 2016 to 2019 – and bettors anticipate Autumn Glow will join the prestigious list of winners as the mare trades at an early $1.30 favourite.
