Trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman have discovered that a light touch works best for the progressing three-year-old gelding Beskar, yielding strong results on course.
The gelding notched consecutive victories by dictating terms throughout Saturday’s Listed South Pacific Classic (1400m) at Randwick, paving the way for a potential Queensland winter carnival campaign.
This came after a surprise triumph in the Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) on his previous outing, where Beskar rediscovered his top form following a disappointing spring.
“He’s become genuine, this horse,” Anthony Freedman said.
“He has always shown us really good ability. He just lost his way and needed gelding, and we’ve changed up a lot with him. We hardly work him, and it’s working for him.
“He can sustain a long gallop. It opens up some options for him at 1400 now.”
Given free rein by Damian Lane, Beskar ($5.50) produced a sharp turn of foot in the straight, with the eventual runner-up Mareth ($13) posing the sole threat, the filly battling gamely yet falling short by a short head.
Regal Award ($1.90) was the next best, a further 1-1/4 lengths adrift.
Freedman noted they hadn’t intended to set the pace, but with the horse beginning sharply, Lane adapted accordingly.
“He’s a horse where, the more you tell him to do something he doesn’t want to do, he tends to work against you,” Lane said.
“When he was free flowing I just went with him and lucky he held on.”
With Saturday’s effort marking just his third appearance this campaign, Beskar now appears set for select three-year-old races in Brisbane.
“He is pretty lightly raced, and he handles this direction so that’s probably the logical step,” Freedman said.
