There isn’t a tougher filly in preparation than Salty Pearl, who is under the guidance of Ciaron Maher.

Following a demanding spring series where she claimed victory at Group 2 level, this reliable filly now chases Group 1 success in the Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville this Saturday.

This weekend’s appearance marks Salty Pearl’s sixth outing this preparation, which began back in January, building on a four-start autumn effort.

The filly has proven capable of handling short turnarounds effectively, though this time the added journey will test her resilience further.

Previously confined to Melbourne tracks, Salty Pearl ventured to Sydney for her latest run, finishing third in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 28, and now heads to Adelaide four weeks on for the Australasian Oaks.

Jack Turnbull, National Assistant Trainer for Ciaron Maher Racing, noted that the team plans to split the journey to Adelaide with a break at their Ballarat headquarters.

“It is hard to travel and maintain form, but she did it for Sydney and the question mark is whether she can back up in Adelaide,” Turnbull said.

“We can break the trip up by stopping over in Ballarat and then it’s only five hours from there, so it’s not a huge ask.

“She’s just a wonderful horse to train.

“She’s incredibly consistent. She doesn’t take any extra work to manage. She’s hardy to train, which is fantastic.

“She had a jump-out last week and ran a really good race in the Vinery, so she will head to the Oaks.”

Salty Pearl will have company from stable companion Paltrow Miss in the Oaks, who contrasts sharply in terms of racing experience.

The filly is set for only her fourth career start on Saturday, having begun in New Zealand prior to linking up with the Maher stable, where she triumphed on debut at Sandown and was runner-up at Caulfield next time out.

“She’s obviously a lot less experienced, but profiles as a horse that warrants going over there,” Turnbull said.

“She still has a bit to learn, but she’s showing good ability.

“It will be tough for her, but she’s only three once, it’s the right time of year, so we’ll give her that chance.”

Craig Williams has the ride on Paltrow Miss, with Ben Allen retained aboard Salty Pearl.
