Bossy Nic set to challenge rivals at Morphettville

The Tony and Calvin McEvoy training partnership is hoping that yielding conditions will suit Bossy Nic during her appearance at Morphettville.

Bossy Nic is bound for the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) this Saturday with the aim of securing an additional Stakes success to her tally.

The McEvoy father-son duo pondered entering her in Saturday’s Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m), which is also run at Morphettville, yet they preferred the milder fillies and mares race for Bossy Nic.

In her second outing as a two-year-old, Bossy Nic claimed victory in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington, leading many to believe she was ready for Sydney’s Autumn Carnival.

That said, Bossy Nic has struggled to recapture that level of performance, managing four triumphs from 29 attempts and earnings close to $740,000, without another Stakes placing to her name.

She managed a third-place finish in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield during last spring’s carnival.

This preparation has seen Bossy Nic compete twice on rain-affected tracks, achieving a placing both times: runner-up on debut back at Flemington, followed by third at Caulfield on April 11.

Morphettville’s expected soft rating on Saturday comes as welcome news for Calvin McEvoy.

“She wants cut in the ground,” McEvoy said.

“She’s a nice mare, she’s going well and is a capable mare on her day and as soon as she gets some soft ground, she improves, which is what she’s had two runs this time in.”

Bossy Nic occupies the third spot in betting markets for the race, trailing Aviatress at $4.20 and Naifah at $4.40.

Experienced jockey Daniel Stackhouse will partner her on Saturday, succeeding apprentice Jackson Radley who rode the mare in her latest two outings this campaign.
