Joe Pride’s star galloper Private Eye, a multiple Group 1 victor, headlines his team at Doomben, yet the trainer anticipates his stable companion The Black Cloud will serve as a capable supporting act.
The seasoned Private Eye takes on the $1.5 million Doomben 10,000 (1200m), with The Black Cloud accompanying him on the journey north for the Listed Magic Millions Bright Shadow (1110m) as part of the undercard.
This marks the mare’s debut appearance at Doomben, though she has ample experience with transportation and regularly excels when away from home.
“She has travelled really well in the past. She’s won at Flemington, she’s won at Eagle Farm, she has placed at Caulfield,” the Sydney-based Pride said.
“Whenever I’ve travelled her away she has always raced well.”
The Black Cloud boasts five victories from 19 outings, including four on tracks impacted by rain.
The track at Doomben sat in the soft category on Wednesday and should hold some give, but Pride noted that damp conditions aren’t her sole advantage.
“And being fresh. Fresh, short-course, bit of a wet track,” he said.
“She has got all those things in her favour. She seems to race best like that.”
Having claimed stakes success at Eagle Farm back in December, The Black Cloud lines up with Nash Rawiller in the saddle and has secured the inside draw from barrier one.
She has enjoyed a break since her respectable run in the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) back in March, where she was beaten by just over a length behind victor Marhoona; although carrying more weight now, the Bright Shadow offers a notable class reduction.
“It’s good form for a Listed race in Brisbane, so she lines up well in this,” Pride said.
Pride also looks forward to a solid performance from veteran Private Eye in the Doomben 10,000, noting the horse has kept pleasing him following his return-to-racing third to stablemate Mazu in King’s Secret during the Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) on April 18.
“I couldn’t be happier with him. It’s a Group One race, they’re never easy, but he’s in great shape,” Pride said.
