EXCLUSIVE: QUEENSLAND BRED STALLIONS – ARE THEY SHAPING UP? AND ANOTHER UNRESERVED APOLOGY OVER THE COURIER MAIL “CHAMPION HORSE” GARBAGE IN TODAY’S EDITION

04/02/16

On 23/12/15 on this website I put up a story entitled, “Exclusive: Queensland Thoroughbred Stallions Pathetic 2YO Results Season-To-Date”. In that story I stated, “I’ve noted in the 2015-2016 thoroughbred racing season-to-date that there has been a distinct lack of 2YOs sired by Queensland based stallions that have been capable of winning a race in Brisbane Saturday city company”.

That aforesaid story showed the results of every metropolitan class 2YO race run at South-East Queensland tracks for the 2015-2016 racing season up to that date.

That story, the thread of which is below, noted that “122 two-year-olds have raced in Saturday city races in Brisbane in the season-to-date. Of the 122 two-year-olds, 57 or 46.72% of all starters have been by sires domiciled in Queensland at the time of the mare’s conception. Conversely that means 53.28% have been by sires standing outside of Queensland when the mare conceived. And of the 13 two-year-old winners only one winner (7.69%) is by a Queensland based stallion and that solitary winner came via Boom Shucka – which is by stallion Love Conquers All. Boom Shucka won a five horse thriller at Doomben on 7/11/15. Now that statistic is obviously what I would call ‘totally disastrous for the Queensland thoroughbred industry’ in that they supplied 46.72% of the starters in Saturday city 2YO races, yet they could supply only 7.69% of the winners”.

My 23/12/15 article also stated, “And apart from Love Conquers All, the 57 Queensland bred 2YOs that have started have been the progeny of a big cross-section of stallions that were based in Queensland for more than one season. The stallions represented in the season-to-date have been, in no particular order, Sidereus, Red Dazzler, Show A Heart, Pressday, Real Saga, Bradbury’s Luck, Falvelon, Drumbeats, Hidden Dragon, Seidnazar, Rothesay and Wicked Style, along with the deceased stallions Sequalo (died 25/9/14), Captain Sonador (17/2/14), Court Command (6/9/13) and Nothing To Lose (17/4/13).”

So being the fair man that I am, I wondered what has happened with 2YO metropolitan 2YO results since the last reviewed meeting from 19/12/15? Today I look at “Saturday city” results from 19/12/15 up to and including the Doomben meeting last Saturday 30/1/16. Here’s the full results list:

So up to and including the 30/1/16 Doomben meeting inclusive, there have been 195 two-year-olds start in Brisbane Saturday races (122 of the former thread and 73 in this batch) and of those 195 two-year-olds, some 93 (57 last story plus 35 here) – or 47.69% of all starters – were sired by stallions that were domiciled in Queensland at the time of the mare’s conception. Conversely that means 52.31% of all starters were by stallions domiciled outside of Queensland.

We’ve now had 19 two-year-old Saturday metropolitan races run in South-East Queensland in the racing season-to-date and of those 19 races only six races have been won by progeny of Queensland based sires. Those six winners of 19 races (or 31.58%) have been Boom Shucka (7/11/15 – Doomben), Just Orm (2/1/16 – Caloundra), Capitalist (9/1/16 – Gold Coast), Love Spy (16/1/16 – Caloundra), Bagus (23/1/16 – Doomben) and Mishani Sleuth (30/1/16 – Doomben). So progeny by Queensland based sires contesting two-year-old races in the Saturday city season-to-date in Queensland number 47.69% of all starters (93 of 195), but that group has provided only 31.58% (6 of 19) of the winners.

To clarify the situation with Capitalist, his sire Written Tycoon was retired to stud in Victoria in 2007 but he did stand in Queensland for just one season and that was the season when Capitalist was conceived (2012), hence Capitalist has to be shown in the above as being by a Queensland based sire.

Interestingly two Queensland bred 2YOs – Party Pardee (by Red Dazzler) and Just Orm (by Falvelon) – made the Magic Millions 2YO field of 16 starters on 9/1/16 at the Gold Coast, but unfortunately they ran second last and last respectively in the race that was won by the still unbeaten Capitalist.

I will continue to monitor these 2YO Saturday city results in South-East Queensland to see if the Queensland based stallions can lift their game and to also get some facts about the thoroughbred industry out into the public arena, which the vast majority of the racing media don’t like to do. And as “self appointed spokesman for the Queensland thoroughbred racing industry” let me unreservedly apologize yet again to any interstate or overseas readers who may be unfortunate enough to read today’s Queensland’s sole state-wide fish and chip wrapper, The Courier Mail racing section, whereby the racehorse Phelan Ready is referred to as a “champion horse.” The facts and realities are that Phelan Ready won just two races between his 2009 Golden Slipper victory and his last racetrack appearance on 25/7/15 – a period of 75 months (in words so there’s no confusion or thought that I made a typo here that’s seventy five). And in that 75 months Phelan Ready started 54 times (that’s fifty four).

This is the second time that I have been forced to apologise publicly so that people don’t think the searing heat of summer has fried the brains of we Queenslanders. Only a couple of weeks ago, the same said “outhouse assistant” – The Courier Mail – named the retiring thoroughbred Temple of Boom a “champion racehorse” even though that particular horse had 1) won just one race in the 44 months and 2) managed just one placing in the 16 months before his retirement. When will all this delusional nonsense in Queensland mainstream media stop? God knows – but until it does I’ll just have to keep putting some facts up here, so that fellow humanoids can get some balance in the debate.

My original story on the Queensland bred 2YOs that went up and is referred to earlier in this text can be read on this thread:
