HISTORICAL FEATURE: STALLIONS THAT STOOD IN QUEENSLAND IN 1984

14/05/14

Justracing likes to bring website visitors stories of historical significance and as no young people are interested in thoroughbred racing, my four websites are designed to appeal to an older audience. To that end, today I’ve reproduced the entire list of Queensland based stallions that stood in the State and were advertised in the September 1984 edition of Racetrack magazine. Reproduced in this article in the race record of the stallions that were advertised and many of them had wonderful CV’s when they headed off to stud.

One of the most interesting stallions is surely the only one of the entire group to hold a track record. Amazingly Todonic still holds a track record at the Bundamba track in Ipswich well over three decades after he set it. His benchmark of 1.02.90 for the 1100-metre distance has never been bettered since he set that record over 35 years ago – on 21/4/1982.

There are some wonderful historical names in the list for 30 years ago. Lorraine Erhart is still training racehorses in Brisbane and is married to jockey Tony Erhart, who is still riding well into his 60’s.

Brian Rudolph was my family doctor for a period of time while I worked in the National Bank in Maryborough as a 17 and 18 year old. Brian sadly passed away a few years ago but he stood stallions of the ilk of Ease The Squeeze at his property just outside of Maryborough and was a popular figure at Brisbane racetracks, enjoying terrific success with his talented filly and later mare – Show Joy. Today Brian’s sons Greg and Matt are heavily involved in racing – Greg is the Deputy Chief Steward for Racing NSW and Matt works for the Australian Turf Club as the Executive General Manager – Racing.

Our Paddy Boy stood just outside Ipswich for the Bell family – at Victory Park Stud. Upon his retirement to stud at Victory Park Our Paddy Boy was advertised as “the greatest stakeswinner ever retired to stud in Queensland” and it would be hard to argue with that.

Russ Hinze, the “minister for everything” in the Bjelke-Petersen era of government in Queensland, stood the stallion Copper Kingdom at his stud on the way to the Gold Coast. Russ Hinze was also Racing Minister in Queensland and he at least had a good understanding of the racing industry, something that seems to be sadly lacking into Racing Ministers of the modern era in Queensland.

Here is the list of stallions that were advertised in Racetrack in September 1984:
