On 11 November, I put up the first of what was promised to be a series of articles turning the clock back some 26 years for website visitors, looking back on the names of thoroughbred “sires of sires” that stood in Australia back nearly three decades ago.
Many of the following names readers will have never heard of – and the following list will show you, how back then many horses that were stallions were given the opportunity, upon their retirement, to star in the breeding barn in either Australia or New Zealand.
Naturally most aspirants to the ranks of “successful sires” proved to be a waste of space, but then again, the same thing happens today with even much better racetrack performed horses.
In the coming weeks I’ll put up more names of stallions in alphabetical order until the entire list from A to Z has been completed, but it will have to go up in segments for the web – as even one article like this one – in this format – is huge.
The first list that I put up publicly contained the list of “sires of sires” from A (Abdicating) to B (Bush Fire) inclusive, as per a 1988 published book entitled “Breeders Handbook”.
Today on www.brisbaneracing.com.au there’s the first montage of photos from Doomben last Saturday. On www.sydneyracing.com.au you can see a photo of what was deemed to be the “much larger crowd than usual” that was back on course when harness racing resumed at Warragul last Monday – but there was room for you – and you can also see why Racing Queensland Integrity boss Wade Birch and Racing Queensland Chief Steward thoroughbreds Allan Reardon are both on some planet other than Earth with their thoroughbred swabbing procedures, whilst on www.melbourneracing.com.au Victorian racing is perused.
