In-form Observational headlines the 18 nominations for the $200,000 Listed Warrnambool Cup, one of the feature races of the three-day carnival in country Victoria.

The John Sadler-trained Observational has won the Golden Mile at Bendigo and Easter Cup at Caulfield at his past two starts ahead of next Thursday’s 2350m race on the final day of the annual Warrnambool meeting which mixes flat and jumps racing.

Victoria’s premier trainer Darren Weir has won the past three Warrnambool Cups – Master Of Arts (2016), Tall Ship (2015) and Akzar (2014) – and has High Church and Unfurl nominated this year.

Also on next Thursday’s card is the $300,000 Grand Annual Steeplechase (5500m) and the past two winners of the feature jumps race, No Song No Supper and Regina Coeli, are among the 18 nominations.

The main race on the opening day on Tuesday is the $125,000 Brierly Steeplechase (3450m) which has 21 entries.

Wednesday’s Listed $150,000 Wangoom Handicap (1200m) has attracted 33 entries including last year’s winner Yesterday’s Songs.

Jungle Edge, placed in two Group One races in Sydney during the autumn carnival, is the highest-rated horse among the nominations.
