Aeliana heavily backed to claim consecutive group 1 successes

Following the announcement that Autumn Glow will chase the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, her stable companion Aeliana is primed to follow up at Rosehill against title defender Dubai Honour in the Tancred Stakes.

Aeliana, among three Group 1 triumphs for Chris Waller and James Mcdonald during Golden Slipper Day, has yet to compete on successive Saturdays, and the Tancred Stakes represents her initial attempt at 2400m since dominating her ATC Australian Derby opponents a year earlier.

Bookmakers have made her a dominant $1.65 favourite, with Dubai Honour next at $4.20, as five fellow Waller charges line up in the highlight, featuring progressive long-distance runner Soul Of Spain.

Should a stablemate cause a surprise, Waller’s deputy trainer Charlie Duckworth pointed to the recent Sky High Stakes placegetter as a prime contender.

“I think he’s going to be hard to beat,” Duckworth said.

“Aeliana is on the back-up. It was a tough, testing run (in the Ranvet Stakes).

“She’s got the form and everything, but a mile-and-a-half at three-year-old grade against a mile-and-a-half against these older, tougher horses is a different ball game.

“River Of Stars will improve up to 2400 metres, and you will see the same from Valiant King. He jumps out of the ground when he gets to 2400 metres as well, so we’ve got some very good hopes.”

Over the last decade, three mares have captured the Tancred Stakes (2400m), with Verry Elleegant achieving it most lately in 2020.

James Mcdonald retains the mount on Aeliana, partnering Waller once more in the card’s other Group 1 aboard ex-Kiwi Ohope Wins, who debuts in Sydney for the powerhouse yard in the Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).
