All paths remain open this spring for Australian Derby winner Aeliana, with a Cox Plate bid among the possibilities.
The classy filly starred during the Sydney autumn, running a luckless second in the Rosehill Guineas before romping home in the Derby by more than five lengths.
Star Thoroughbreds’ Denise Martin is happy to leave the planning to trainer Chris Waller, but she’s confident Aeliana is poised for a big spring.
“Chris has reported that she has returned extremely well. She has strengthened and matured and developed nicely,” Martin said.
Aeliana is set to trial twice before a likely return in late August, with races like the Winx Stakes and Memsie Stakes in play.
From there, targets could include the Makybe Diva, Turnbull, Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate.
“We were elated because I couldn’t have believed I would have purchased a Derby winner,” Martin said.
She also celebrated off the track, with 2023 Coolmore Classic winner Espiona selling for $4.15 million after being bought for just $190,000.
