Amelia’s Jewel back in work ahead of spring campaign

Amelia’s Jewel is due to enter Simon Miller’s Ascot stables tonight (Tuesday) to be prepared for her Melbourne and Sydney spring campaign.

“She’ll trial up here (Perth) twice and then we’ll put her on a plane in the middle of September or start of September and head over,” Miller told The Races WA.

“She’s done well spelling and looks good.

“She’s filled out, she hasn’t shot up, but has filled out.

“She’s heavier, a lot heavier than last time.”

Amelia’s Jewel has spent the past three months spelling at her home base at Amelia Park since her agonising defeat at Ascot in April.

In the inaugural running of the $4 million The Quokka (1200m), Amelia’s Jewel ran a heart-breaking short-head second to Sydney sprinter Overpass.

Amelia’s Jewel was charging home at a rate of knots from the back of the field for jockey Pat Carbery, but to the chagrin of a parochial home town crowd, she couldn’t bridge the gap on the winner.

Miller has identified two Melbourne races to launch Amelia’s Jewel’s interstate campaign, but beyond that the options are plentiful.

A shot at the $5 million Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 28 or the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill on November 4 are on the cards.

Throw in a curveball of the inaugural $5 million King Charles III Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Everest Day and the options open to Miller and owner-breeder Peter Walsh are plentiful.

The King Charles III Stakes, previously known as the George Main Stakes, holds G1 status and is staged on the same day as $1 million G1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield on October 14.

Miller says he has plenty to think about.

“Her first up run will be the Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on September 16,” Miller said.

“Then there is the Stock Stakes (1600m) two weeks later at Moonee Valley.

“She’ll definitely race in those two and then it’s whether we go two weeks to a Toorak and then up to a Golden Eagle or a Cox Plate.

“Or we opt for the King Charles, back for a Cox Plate or a Golden Eagle.

“We’ll get through the first two races then it’s a fork in the road.

“We can either duck up to Sydney or stay down in Melbourne.

“It’s a hard one, a tricky one, what do you set yourself up best for.”

Amelia’s Jewel, a daughter of Siyouni, has seven wins and two seconds from nine starts with $2.3 million in prizemoney.

The G1 Northerly Stakes (1800m), the G2 WA Guineas (1600m), G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) and G3 Roma Cup (1100m) her principal Perth wins.

Meanwhile, Miller says highly rated stable mate Live To Tell is a chance to join her star stable mate in Melbourne.

The Territories filly underlined her promise in the autumn with dual stakes wins in the Supremacy Stakes (1000m) and Gimcrack Stakes (1100m).

She was denied a clean sweep of Perth’s main juvenile races when runner-up to Super Smink in the Karrakatta Plate (1200m) last April.

Miller says Panzdown will be his main hope of extending his top record in the Listed Bolton Sprint (1200m) at Belmont on Saturday.

Miller shares the Bolton training record with Fred Kersley after previous wins to Amasenus (2021), Valour Road (2019), First Among Equals (2016) and Power Princess (2011).
