Conditions to suit Aysar in Bletchingly Stakes

Aysar has been a cause of frustration for those in charge at Lindsay Park after showing considerable promise as a three-year-old.

Now in the care of Ben and Jd Hayes, Aysar heads to the Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday, bidding to win his first race in almost two years.

Aysar won two of his first three starts and at start number five finished second to Ole Kirk in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).

In 12 starts since that narrow defeat, Aysar has a further three second placings to his credit while finishing out of the money on nine occasions.

Ben Hayes does not believe Aysar has lost the ability to win at stakes level and is banking on an improving track to produce a better performance from the rising five-year-old.

After a short break, Aysar finished sixth to Mileva in the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on July 9 and Lindsay Park has adopted a change of training regime since.

“He’s going to get a drying track which is fantastic,” Ben Hayes said.

“I don’t think a Soft 7 is his right surface even though he won on a wet track as a younger horse.

“He probably needs to improve a bit on that last run after a couple of trials, but he did surprise me with how much of a blow he did have.

“He’s got a tendency at home to work excellently and then not show it on race day, so we’ve kept him on the fresh side, and hopefully he can show that excellent work on race day.”

Hayes said the slight rise in trip is expected to suit Aysar on Saturday while he also noted the race was more competitive with the interstate raiders engaged than what the Sir John Monash was.

“He will have to make that step, but he does have the ability to do it, it’s whether he decides to do it,” Hayes said.

“He’s been a frustrating horse, but at the same time he’s been a very good horse for us.

“While he hasn’t won, his record is good and if he gets it right, it will be a big thrill for J D and myself.”
