Veteran trainer David Payne has continued his impressive spring form at Randwick, securing his fourth metropolitan Saturday victory in as many weeks with the talented filly Bangkok Hottie.

The three-year-old added the Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) to her earlier triumph in the Furious Stakes (1200m) just two weeks prior. This success marks a significant run for Payne’s stable, which began with Proxima Dea’s Midway Handicap win on August 29 and included Persian Wonder’s victory in the Ming Dynasty Quality (1400m) last weekend.

Payne, a distinguished jockey and trainer in his native South Africa, has consistently produced good horses since his arrival in Australia. The 78-year-old expressed great satisfaction with his recent string of wins.

“I’m making a comeback,” Payne quipped. “You get nice horses, you look after them, they reward you.”

Partnered by jockey Kerrin McEvoy, Bangkok Hottie ($3.90) began well from her mid-field draw, settling behind the pace set by Rachini. She surged to the lead in the home straight, successfully holding off a late challenge from Striking Alibi ($2.70 fav) by three-quarters of a length.

Global Goal ($7.50) also finished strongly to secure third place, another long neck further back.

The top three finishers are expected to compete again in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in two weeks. Payne is confident that Bangkok Hottie will handle the increased distance.

“Not at all. She keeps winning, so who’s worried?” he said. “We didn’t want her that handy, but the way the track was playing, I said to Kerrin, ‘I’m leaving it to you’. And he does the right thing. I wish she could get a decent draw where she could be covered up. Maybe in the Flight Stakes, hopefully.”

Jockey James Mcdonald commented that Striking Alibi encountered “no luck” and performed admirably to finish second, setting the stage for an exciting rematch with the winner in the final event of the four-race Princess Series.
