Barbie’s Fox has relished the heavy track at Sandown to break through for a long overdue victory.

The Louise Bonella-trained mare registered her first win in 437 days when taking out the Ladbrokes Switch Handicap (1600m) on Wednesday.

The previous time Barbie’s Fox scored was at Caulfield in May last year, on a heavy track over 1200m.

Under the guidance of apprentice Lewis German, Barbie’s Fox was sent off a $4.20 equal Sportsbet favourite before defeating Unfair Dismissal ($6) with Tinandali ($51) in third place.

Barbie’s Fox was third-up and after getting back in her first two outings was ridden handier to the speed on Wednesday.

“We expected her to be handier over the mile and there didn’t appear to be a lot of speed either,” Bonella told racing.com.

“I was happy for her to be there and not doing much work and it proved well in the end.”

There was a lot of hype surrounding Barbie’s Fox’s last run at Flemington when it was hoped she could provide Jamie Kah with her 100th win for the season on July 3.

Barbie’s Fox was beaten into fourth place that day and Kah had to wait until the following week to reach the milestone.

But the performance did its job for Bonella who only needed to keep the daughter of Foxwedge ticking over ahead on Wednesday’s assignment.

“We had to see today whether she got the mile and she’s done that well,” Bonella said.

“And being handier and not having the to do the work has got the job done.

“We’ll just step through the next grade and see where we go, but if we can cop a really wet track, as today was a nice wet track for her, and she can get a nice race, she may be competitive.”
