As a natural backmarker, Bauhinia depends heavily on luck during races, something she has not enjoyed consistently.

Co-trainer Lee Curtis anticipates that the mare’s luck will improve this autumn, beginning with her appearance in Saturday’s Wenona Girl Quality (1200m) at Randwick.

“Her work has been as good as ever, if not better,” Curtis said.

“Her trial was really good. She finished behind Peter Snowden’s horse, Raging Force, and she beat home Arctic Glamour in the trial.

“She’s going super. We only gave her one trial but we’re happy.”

With two victories from 11 outings, Bauhinia competed strongly against top Sydney mares last spring, ending up a unlucky fifth behind Stefi Magnetica in The Invitation (1400m) and narrowly missing out on catching Arctic Glamour in the Hot Danish Stakes (1400m).

Curtis indicates that she will once more settle midfield from her barrier on Saturday, allowing her time to build momentum for her strong finishing burst.

“It’s a six furlong race, so she will be getting back anyway,” he said.

“She’s third in the betting so she is a chance.”

Just three runners sit at single-figure prices in the Wenona Girl Quality, where Gangsta Granny ($3.20) edges Idle Flyer ($3.50) as the market elect, and Bauhinia occupies the next spot at $9.50.
