The Mick Price and Michael Kent stable has tightened its grip on Victoria’s leading two-year-old race after Big Sky’s commanding win at Caulfield.
The unbeaten colt now sits atop markets for the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) on February 21.
Big Sky earned favouritism after leading throughout to win the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) on Saturday.
Ridden by Ben Melham, the $1.60 favourite scored by three lengths from Invincible Son, with La Gitana finishing third.
Stablemate Guest House is second elect for the Blue Diamond and will run next in the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m).
Price said the three-week gap into the Blue Diamond suited Big Sky better than a shorter turnaround.
“I think he lost a bit of nervousness (from Flemington),” Price said.
“He was a bit unsure of himself (that day), but today he was a bit cooler.
“He’s a colt that is learning. He’s not an alpha colt, he’s a quiet colt and if he has a good three weeks, he should turn up (and run well).”
Price added the colt would be kept on a natural path into the Blue Diamond, with no gear changes planned.
