Bjorn Baker feeling butterflies over Roman Consul date

Bjorn Baker is backing undefeated colt Ozzmosis to continue his rise through the ranks as he prepares for his toughest test yet in the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes at Rosehill.

The undefeated son of Zoustar takes on Golden Slipper placegetter King’s Gambit, the well-performed Barber and the emerging Celestial Legend in Saturday’s 1200m sprint and while conceding to feeling some nerves, Baker has an overriding confidence in his charge.

“When you’ve got a promising colt like that, Saturday will be a bit of a nerve-wracking day,” Baker said.

“It’s a Group Two so it’s very important in terms of his future career.

“He was good first-up, he only had the one trial going into that so I’m hopeful he has improved again off that.”

Ozzmosis was floated as a potential Everest candidate after his first-up triumph in the Heritage Stakes (1100m) but with only Yulong’s slot remaining, and likely to be filled by one of their own in Alcohol Free, the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) is the target race Baker has in his sights.

While a victory on Saturday is important, a win in the stallion-making Flemington feature will ice the decision by Newgate and its partners to buy into Ozzmosis earlier this year, securing his future at stud.

Although Baker believes the three-year-old can achieve a bit on the track before then.

“He’s got a great attitude and he’s got a lot of the attributes we like to see in good horses,” he said.

“I’m sure he’s going to be running in better things as time goes by.”

Fresh from her Group 1 victory on Just Fine in last weekend’s Metropolitan, Rachel King will again partner Ozzmosis, who has drawn barrier six in the field of eight.
