Bjorn Baker, known for his relaxed demeanor, was overcome with emotion after Stefi Magnetica claimed the $4 million Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.

The win marked the first Group 1 victory for Baker in the prestigious race, and it was made even more special as it came on a day his father, Murray, had enjoyed much success, including five Australian Derbies.

“Hay fever. It’s very bad at this time of year,” a teary-eyed Baker joked. “Murray would be very, very proud. He’s always loved Australian racing, and I’m lucky to be a part of it.”

Stefi Magnetica ($18), last year’s Stradbroke Handicap winner, bounced back from a tough start to the season with a head victory over Royal Patronage ($14), aided by a superb ride from Jason Collett.

“It’s very, very special,” Baker said, reflecting on the win. “We needed a big one during The Championships.”

Baker, currently third in the Sydney trainers’ premiership, admitted that the Doncaster Mile victory ranks as his career highlight.

“It’s an iconic Sydney race, and I had to win it,” he said. “That’s what makes it special.”

Collett, who executed a perfect race plan, was surprised by his position at the finish.

“I was in the right spot, and her turn of foot was electric,” he said.

Meanwhile, Linebacker, the $5.50 favourite, finished with a strong run despite a slow start. Jockey Zac Lloyd described his performance as “enormous.”
