Blue Diamond Stakes market reshuffled after crucial lead-up races

The Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes market has been shaken up following upsets in key lead-up races at Caulfield on Saturday.

My Gladiola, the favourite for the Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m), was expected to secure her top spot after racing in the filly’s division of the Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m), but she finished second as an odds-on favourite.

Godolphin’s Aleppo Pine, a second elect in the Blue Diamond market, led early in the colt’s and gelding’s Prelude but faded to finish fifth behind Field Of Play.

Stewards reported Aleppo Pine had pulled up lame in his left foreleg.

Field Of Play, not nominated for the Blue Diamond, surged to a $5 favourite after his impressive win, with Palm Angel at $6.

My Gladiola has eased to $8 following her defeat.

Natalie Young, who trains Field Of Play with Trent Busuttin, said paying the $55,000 late entry fee for the Blue Diamond was an easy decision.

“It is when you’re racing for $2 million,” Young said.

Jockey Blake Shinn praised Field Of Play’s performance and hinted he would contribute some of his winning percentage to the late nomination fee.

Palm Angel, previously a top Blue Diamond contender, was defeated by My Gladiola in the Blue Diamond Preview but trainer Jason Warren is confident of a better performance next time.

“We’re much improved,” Warren said, “and we’ll tighten up further for the Grand Final in two weeks.”
