Bootlegger ready to step up in SA Sires’ Produce Stakes

Group 1-winning trainer Dan Clarken is confident Bootlegger can deliver another feature two-year-old win in Saturday’s G3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville.

The son of Too Darn Hot broke his maiden stylishly at Gawler and has continued to improve, according to Clarken and co-trainer Oopy McGillivray.

“He hasn’t taken any step back from the other day,” Clarken said.

“Sometimes the racing can toughen them up… he’s certainly done that between the two runs.”

Clarken believes the gelding still has more to offer and suits Saturday’s race, which features 10 juveniles from SA and Victoria.

“It’s a good race for him and he’s a versatile horse,” he said.

While not as forward as stablemate Steel Trap, Clarken says Bootlegger has always shown talent.

“He’s got gears… there wouldn’t be a great deal between them on natural ability,” he said.

Bootlegger brings tactical flexibility and rising confidence into his Group 3 assignment.
